Getting to Kuusamo is easy!
✈️ FLYING TO KUUSAMO ✈️
✈️Finnair has some flights between Helsinki (HEL) and Kuusamo (KAO).
✈️In case these flights do not suit for Your needs, there are also options to fly either to Oulu or Rovaniemi. Also Norwegian operates to/from Oulu and Rovaniemi.
🚌In case you choose Oulu (OUL) or Rovaniemi (RVN) as your destination from where to continue towards Kuusamo but You prefer to use a rental car option, kindly book the car in advance to wait your arrival. The rental services don’t necessary occupy their airport desks all the time.
Reminder: Oulu is some 250km away from Kuusamo and Rovaniemi also about 200km. Yes, for us living in area these are considered being nearby.
🚗 DRIVING TO RUKA 🚗
When setting off from Helsinki, the most direct road to Kuusamo is Finnish national road 5, and the distance to cover is a little over 800 km. The route via Oulu is also favoured by many. You can find great places to take a break and refuel along the way. Please keep in mind: the reindeer herding area begins near Kiiminki when arriving via Oulu and in Suomussalmi when coming via Kajaani.

🚌 GETTING TO KUUSAMO BU TRAIN AND BUS 🚆
You can take the environmentally friendly train to Kemijärvi, Oulu or Rovaniemi, from where you can continue on to Kuusamo by bus and then take a local bus to Ruka. And don’t forget the option of a car-carrier train: load your car on the train and get behind the wheel well-rested and refreshed in the morning.
The night train runs daily from Helsinki to Kemijärvi and there’s a bus connection to Ruka. The car-carrier train continues to Kemijärvi three days a week (Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays). Vice versa, return departures by car-carrier train from Kemijärvi on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The bus connection between Rovaniemi and Kuusamo operates on weekdays. The bus connection between Kuusamo Aiport and Rovaniemi Airport also runs through Kuusamo city center, Rovaniemi bus station, and Rovaniemi railway station.
Getting around Kuusamo is easy!

All scheduled flights arriving at Kuusamo have an airport bus transport to Ruka (available by pre-bookings). From Ruka village, you can take a bus to Kuusamo city centre or the national parks in the area.

Taxis in Ruka-Kuusamo serve you 24/7. In the summer, you can also choose the popular shared taxi (“kimppataksi” in Finnish) to Karhunkierros Trail.

To national parks and the airport with local buses
If you arrive by plane, all scheduled flights have a pre-booked airport bus transport to Ruka. The airport bus waits for all arriving passengers from each scheduled flight, and if there is space available, you can board without a reservation (the ticket price is the same when purchased on the bus).
Regular buses run between Ruka village and Kuusamo centre, SkiBus in the winter and the Karhunkierros Trail bus in the summer.
Pohjolan Matka is once again providing transportation to the NUTS Karhunkierros event.
You can depart on Thursday directly from Helsinki, Tampere, Jyväskylä, or on Friday from Oulu!
